Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish has remained noncomittal on his side's efforts to sign Barry Ferguson.

McLeish knows Ferguson well from his time at Ibrox and is contemplating making a move for the former Rangers captain, who has no future in his home country.

The ex-Scotland skipper was banned from the national team and stripped of the captaincy at both international and club level following a drinking-related disciplinary infraction in April.

This has led many to believe that Birmingham could make a move, but McLeish is not showing his cards just yet.

Speaking to the Daily Express, he said, "Barry is definitely someone that we have given consideration to, among others.

"I don’t want to commit myself right away to the midfield situation because there is still a little bit of work to be done. We hope to bring in a midfielder of quality, who can go anywhere in the league and not be fazed by taking the ball.

“We have others in the pipeline that we have been working hard on. Ferguson has come late in the day in terms of knowing that he is now available, but we are not making our mind up right now."

The 31-year-old still has a year left on his contract at Ibrox, but Rangers are keen to cash in on him now, as they have no intention of renewing his contract.
