Middlesbrough Pave Way For Stewart Downing To Join Tottenham Hotspur - Report
Boro will allow their home-grown star to finally leave for North London...
The 24-year-old is currently recovering from a foot injury that will keep him out of action for the start of the season, but a deal may be completed for Downing to move in January or sooner.
Reports from The Daily Telegraph suggest that Middlesbrough's first summer signing, Mark Yeates from Colchester, has paved the way for Downing's exit.
Downing has been a long-term target for Spurs and Boro have been left with little option but to cash-in on their England international, following relegation to the Championship.
New signing Yeates is also 24 years old and is a goal scoring winger, netting 13 times last season, and is much in the Downing mould.
Yeates revealed there was only one move for him this summer, once 'Boro came calling, "This is massive for me. There was interest from other clubs but there was only one thing on my mind once my agent told me Middlesbrough had been in touch," said the Dublin-born winger.
The former Tottenham winger is relishing the challenge of taking Boro back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
"This club belongs in the Premier League, the fans deserve to be there and I can't wait to play in front of the fans," he concluded.
