Stewart Downing To Tottenham Hotspur Talk Intensifies
The Middlesbrough flanker could be swapping Teesside for Tottenham...
Chief executive Keith Lamb indicated to the Tottenham Journal that negotiations could take place should the club wish to begin proceedings. "It wouldn't be the easiest negotiations from their point of view, but I would certainly take their call," he said.
The capture of Stewart Downing could doom David Bentley to a White Hart Lane exit, as Aaron Lennon would continue to be regarded as the preferential outlet down the right hand side, while Downing would occupy the left flank. Aston Villa are said to be interested.
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is a public admirer of Downing's skills, and even made inquiries in 2006, although he had a £12 million offer rejected during the winter transfer window.
Such a fee is unlikely to be returned now that Middlesbrough will look to re-build so they can quickly return to England's top tier.
