Mark Hughes Confirms Top-Six Target For Manchester City
The City boss will be satisfied to finish four places higher up the table next season...
There have been reports that a top-six finish has been stipulated as a minimum requirement for the Welshman, who up until very recently could not have felt very sure about having a job at all beyond the summer. City's billionaire owner Sheikh Mansour ultimately deemed himself to be satisfied with the team's midtable finish due to it being a transition year.
Hughes did not indicate whether any targets had been thrust upon him, preferring instead to point out that they would have finished a great deal higher than tenth had they managed to solve their away-day blues.
"We are frustrated because our away form has compromised how well we have been able to do this year certainly our home form is good," the ex Blackburn boss was quoted as saying in the Express.
"We have quality here, we have a goal threat and that is really important. As we move forward we look to go into the market to look to add to the quality to what we already have and we need to address our away form.
"If we do that then obviously we can build on this season. It's been difficult it's been a hard season for everyone, a season of change.
"We know now that we have got through the season and we can benefit from the experiences of this season and I have no doubt we will be stronger next season as a group."
"The challenge is to get the top six I feel that is a realistic goal for ourselves," he added.
"We just have to be strong and of the mindset to get the job done and we haven't had that mind-set but hopefully we will next year."
City at least managed to finish the season on a high note, defeating Bolton Wanderers 1-0 at Eastlands thanks to a Felipe Caicedo goal.
