Danny Collins Surprised By Sunderland's League Position

The Black Cats defender didn't imagine himself in the midst of a survival fight this season...

Sunderland star Danny Collins admits he never would have imagined that his side would be still battling for their Premier League existence going into the final day of the season - or at all, for that matter.

Going into this campaign the versatile defender had the Black Cats pegged for a mid-table finish, possibly with an outside shot of sneaking the final European place.

"I think we thought we would be sitting somewhere like Wigan or West Ham in that middle of the table where they haven't got too much to play for now," Collins told local reporters ahead of their game against Chelsea, which they must win to make absolutely sure of survival.

"It's exciting for the neutrals, I suppose. The last time we were relegated, we were down long before the end of the season, which wasn't nice, so at least we are still in the mix of things and still in the driving seat."

Collins, who was last week confirmed as the Sunderland supporters' Player of the Year, continued, "We have had three or four very good chances to put the season to bed with a few games to go, and we haven't taken them.

"That's the disappointing thing. We have had a couple of bites at the cherry."

Sbragia's side could stay up even if they lose the game against the Blues on Sunday, depending on how Newcastle United and Hull City get on in their respective games.
