Manchester City Chief Garry Cook: Mark Hughes Will Decide Who Comes And Goes This Summer

City's CEO has moved to dispel the notion that 'Sparky' is being squeezed out by the club...

Under Pressure: Mark Hughes watching his mega-money Manchester City side lose to bottom side West Brom.
Manchester City chief executive Garry Cook has insisted that Mark Hughes will have the final say when it comes to the club's transfer dealings this summer.

Much has been made of the ostentatious wealth at the disposal of the Abu Dhabi United Group, who completed their takeover of the club earlier in the season, but the City supremo was adamant that the owners won't be looking to treat the club as if it were a 'Fantasy Football' game.

"There are budgets. People talk about a list like it's the back of a fag-packet and some names. We have thick files on each individual," Cook assured in the The Times.

"It's a rigorous process and it always starts with Mark. It's not us saying, 'Hey, Mark, we've got a great guy who would be great at Disney. Fit him in.'

"We might look to sign people who can lift the profile of the club, but only if they have the ability and the character to fit into Mark's structure."

In effect, Cook was ruling out the possibility of a change of managers at the end of the season in the face of reports linking them to Inter boss Jose Mourinho.

"Mark had an appraisal of his performance for the year, like any employee," added the City chief.

"We didn't fill in forms, but we talked about challenges. When you go through that process of review, names come up, but that is only ever done internally.

"There was no need to take that process externally because we have a manager in place that we're very happy with.

"We have never talked to Jose Mourinho or anyone else. The only manager we have spoken to is Mark Hughes."

Most recently City have been linked with a swoop for Didier Drogba, though almost inevitably this summer's transfer pages will be a veritable who's who in world football being linked to Eastlands.
