Middlesbrough Must Leave Everything On The Field At West Ham - Adam Johnson
The winger has admitted that the only thing Boro can do any longer is give their very best and hope that other results go their way...
Middlesbrough midfielder Adam Johnson has admitted that plenty of things will have to go right in order for the club to pull off a great escape on the final game of the season this weekend.
Boro's failure to beat Aston Villa at home last weekend left them mired in second-to-last place with just one game remaining - and with their hands in the future of Manchester United's second string.
In effect, Gareth Southgate's side must win against West Ham United and hope that Newcastle United lose to Aston Villa (because of their superior goal difference) and Hull City lose to Man United, who will be resting their top stars after clinching the title last weekend.
Even that may not be enough, however, as should Hull lose to United and Middlesbrough beat West Ham, Boro would still need to make up four goals because the Tigers have a superior goal difference.
"We've got to go West Ham with no fear like we did in the FA Cup game earlier this year," Johnson told the club's official website.
"We came away with a good result but I think we should have been two or three up at half-time.
"So hopefully we can go there, put on the same type of performance and convert some chances.
"We know it's a huge uphill task now, but as long as we've still got that chance we'll keep fighting.
"It's just such a shame, if we had got that win on Saturday (against Aston Villa) things would be looking extremely good for us," he added.
"A lot of things have gone wrong this season but we cannot just sit back and dwell on them. There is a game to win on Sunday and we must make sure we do our jobs.
"We can't go into the game worrying about other results."
All the remaining Premier League games are set to kick-off simultaneously at 16:00 local time on Sunday.
