Leighton Baines Hails Partnership With Everton Team-Mate Steven Pienaar

Everton eased to victory over Sunderland at the weekend, winning 2-0 on Wearside thanks, in large part, to a superb display from South African winger Steven Pienaar. The hard-working winger scored one and played a significant part in the Blues' second, setting up Marouane Fellaini.

The way in which Pienaar linked with the full-back lining-up behind him on Everton's left side, Leighton Baines, was productive, and the England international has today spoken out in praise of the positive partnership that has built up between the two players.

"We have an understanding with each other and he helps me out defensively, he [Pienaar] tracks back and works hard," Baines told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"Going the other way I'll run past him and create a bit of space.

"He's got such fantastic ability that if he gets that space he's not going to lose the ball.

"He will pick out a pass or will beat somebody, he's always productive so I think we have a good understanding at the moment down our side and Steven is someone I absolutely love playing with."

The partnership's next test comes against Tottenham Hotpsur at the weekend, when Baines will more than likely be tasked with marking the formidable Aaron Lennon.

The Liverpool-born left-back remains unperturbed, though, and concluded by insisting that he would take the game to the Spurs man, adding, "I think it's important that you do your defensive job as best you can and then hopefully cause him a few problems as well going the other way."
