Seuleiman Alphonso Omondi, 29, from Embakasi, Nairobi, in Kenya, watched the match in the pub but when the realisation dawned on him that his side were crashing out of the European Cup, he became inconsolable, and left the tavern in fits of tears, Calvin Otieno - one of Omondi's friends - explained to AFP.
"We were watching the match at Bamba 70 pub, and when Arsenal were defeated, Suleiman just walked out in protest and he was crying," Otieno said.
"We didn't know he was going to hang himself until this morning, when we received the reports and came here to find his body at the balcony."
Arsenal are one of the most popular clubs in Africa, and the Premier League and Champions League are among the hottest football fixtures on the continent. They are more widely watched than Africa's own domestic competitions.
