Tony McMahon Extends Contract With Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough defender Tony McMahon has signed a deal to keep him on Teesside until 2012.
Middlesbrough defender Tony McMahon, who recently returned to the side after a loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday, has signed a new contract at the Riverside binding him to the club for another three years.
The right-back had struggled to force his way into 'Boro's first team after his debut in 2005 due to a string of injuries, but since his retrieval from Sheffield by boss Gareth Southgate, McMahon has been something of a 'contender' for the relegation-threatened Premier League side.
"Why would I want to leave?" the 23-year-old told Middlesbrough's official website.
"I've been through a lot but the club always stood by me. Now I've got aims I want to achieve.
"Even when I went on loan, I always said I wanted to come back to Middlesbrough."
After falling victim to a broken leg, dislocated shoulder and numerous mounting knee problems, 'Boro gaffer Gareth Southgate hailed the McMahon's fighting spirit.
"Tony's had a long battle back from two very serious injuries and he's got himself back in the first team squad," he said.
"There are still big challenges ahead for him to try and force his way into the team regularly, but he has shown tremendous character to come back from the injuries and show people that he is able to play at this level."
