The half-brother of Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe died on Friday night following a street assault.
Jade Defoe was attacked in broad daylight on Monday in Leytonstone, east London.
The 26-year-old's skull was fractured as a result of the attack and he sustained brain damage.
It is as yet unknown whether he was attacked by a single person or a group, but police do not think that a weapon was used.
"We retain an open mind as to any motive, and inquiries continue to establish the full circumstances of the incident," said a Metropolitan police spokesman.
A 28-year-old has been arrested by Newham CID, who are investigating the case, apparently on suspicion of perverting the court of justice.
The death meant Jermaine Defoe did not travel north with his Tottenham Hotspur team-mates for their match against Manchester United later on today.
