Stewart Downing Hints At Middlesbrough Exit

The left-winger has suggested he may need to leave Boro to ensure a place in England's squad should they qualify for the 2010 World Cup...

Premiership: Stewart Downing (Middlesbrough)
Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing has revealed that there is a distinct possibility that he will leave the club at the end of the season.

The 24-year-old seems to be the subject of transfer speculation during almost every window and was linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur in January.

However, Boro once more kept hold of their star man but it appears that the Teesside outfit may not be so lucky over the summer.

"I care about this club, but I've an England place to think of," Downing is quoted as saying by The Daily Mirror.

"It's the World Cup next year and I need to play at the highest level to be there."

Middlesbrough are currently battling against relegation from the Premier League and sit three points adrift of safety with five games remaining.

The 24-year-old, who has received plenty of plaudits for his form this season, despite his club’s precarious position, insists he will do his utmost to help keep the club in England's top flight.

"I am here until the summer so I might as well get on with it and help us stay in the league," The Daily Mail quote Downing as remarking.

"Staying in this league would be the biggest one, then whoever is here next year and whoever is not can hold their head up and say, 'I did my bit.' Hopefully, that will be enough for people.

"I am playing in front of my friends, family and home-town people, so that's another one. You don't want to play poorly in front of them because things would be said. You just get on with it and hopefully we will get out of the situation we are in."

It is thought that Merseyside rivals Liverpool and Everton may well compete with Spurs for the 23-time capped England international's signature, which is thought to be valued in excess of £10 million.
