Jonas Gutierrez Claims To Have No Regrets About Joining Newcastle United

Spiderman does not feel bad about swapping Spain for the banks of the Tyne...

New signing and fan favourite at Newcastle United, Jonas Gutierrez, faces a spell on the sideslines after picking up an injury on international duty with Argentina.
Newcastle United's Argentine winger Jonas Gutierrez is still pleased he opted to join the Magpies last summer from Spanish outfit Real Mallorca, even though the club find themselves staring down the barrel of relegation to the Championship at the end of his first season at St James' Park.

"I have no regrets," he told The Newcastle Chronicle. "I hoped I would have the chance to go to Portsmouth in January 2008 before I came here.

"But I am glad that I came here. The only worry is that we have five games and we have to win as many of them as possible."

Newcastle welcome Portsmouth to Tyneside on Monday for a crucial game in this season's relegation battle, and Gutierrez is hoping for a repeat of the Toon's performance on the previous occasion the two sides met, when he was man of the match in a 3-0 win for the Magpies at Fratton Park.

"This is going to be my most important game for the club," the South American added.

"We know exactly where we are so we must take three points. The training has been very good and everybody is prepared for the game with Portsmouth.

"All the players are aware of just how serious this situation is.

"It [the previous clash with Pompey] was an incredible match and maybe my best match. I think that we did a lot of things right. We kept the ball, we scored three very good goals and they just couldn’t get the ball off us that day.

"We could have scored a fourth or a fifth goal that day. It was, for me, the best game I played."

He still has the champagne he was awarded for his display that day, and concluded by announcing that he plans to drink it when United are finally safe from relegation, saying, "I still have the champagne, I didn’t drink it and it’s still at my home. If we stay up at the end of the season I am sure I will drink that champagne."
