UEFA President Michel Platini: Referees Must Stop Games If Racist Chants Are Heard

The Frenchman believes that halting play by 10 minutes could help put an end to racial abuse...

Michel Platini
UEFA president Michel Platini has revealed that he wants referees to abandon matches should they hear supporters singing racist songs.

The news comes after a section of Juventus fans were alleged to have aimed racial abuse at Inter forward Mario Balotelli during a recent Serie A fixture.

La Vecchia Signora have been ordered to play their next home game behind closed doors, despite denials from fans that they were guilty of any wrongdoing.

Apparently, Platini plans to introduce a measure whereby officials can suspend a game for ten minutes as a result of racist chanting. This plan will be proposed at a UEFA meeting in Romania due to take place in May.

"The only way to get rid of racism is stop the game," Platini is quoted as saying by The Sun.

"It’ll take courage on the part of the referee — but the decision by UEFA now is to suspend games for ten minutes in the case of racist songs.

"If the problem continues, games will be stopped completely. Our message is clear — zero tolerance of racism."
