Steven Gerrard Calls For Liverpool Victory Over Arsenal

The Reds skipper is echoing his manager in terms of the pride he feels in his team, and wants more of that spirit as they look to end a wait of 19 years for a league title...

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has issued a rallying cry to his Reds team-mates ahead of tonight's Anfield match-up with Arsenal, urging them to show more of the same fight that they showed in exiting the Champions League in such a hard-fought way to Chelsea, with them drawing 4-4 at Stamford Bridge to lose the tie 7-5 on aggregate.

"After we lost the first leg of the Champions League semi-final to Chelsea, we knew that we needed to respond to the setback in a positive way," he wrote in his programme notes for tonight's game.

"The boys went out against Blackburn and did what we had been talking about at Melwood all week, and we took that positivity down to Stamford Bridge.

"Not many people gave us a chance of clawing our way back into the tie last week, except the fans and the players. It was a massive ask for any team - but we're not any team.

"We gave it our best shot, everything we had to give, and it was almost good enough. We gave Chelsea the fright of their lives, and we believed we could go on and complete the comeback. Even when they'd got back on level terms again the boys refused to buckle.

"I don't think there are many teams out there who would have responded the way we did in the circumstances. We don't know when we're beaten. We've proved that time and again this season with late goals and recoveries when we've looked in trouble.

"In the race for a league title, those are great qualities to have."

The England talisman was not underestimating tonight's opponents either, assering that the Gunners were, on their day, as good as anyone in Europe. A victory was still requirted though, however tough the opposition might be.

He added, "No-one coming to the game tonight who knows anything about football needs me to tell them that on form Arsenal are one of the toughest teams in Europe. But in our position, with the games running out and every point absolutely vital to us, nothing less than a win will do.

"Arsenal face Manchester United in Europe, and they've got a league game to play. Chelsea have got Barcelona, so all of those teams have distractions. We've got our eyes on just one prize.

"No-one's going to lie and pretend that it's the way we'd want it. We'd rather still be involved in Europe, and in the FA Cup.

"We're a team that's used to winning trophies, and the Premier League is our last chance to give the season a happy ending now. So we're going to give it everything we have, because it's the only way we know."
