Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill is adamant that the club will not pay excessive transfer fees for new recruits in the transfer window over the summer.

According to the British tabloid The Daily Star, quotes attributed to the Northern Irish tactician about meeting transfer valuations are in reference to Standard Leige's Steven Defour.

The Villans have been linked with the 20-year-old midfielder on several occasions and it is claimed that they have scouted the 5ft 8in star.

Apparently, O'Neill has identified the 16-time capped Belgium international as a possible replacement for Gareth Barry, who could be on his way to Liverpool at the end of the season.

However, the 57-year-old insists the Midlands-based outfit will only pay what they believe a player to be worth.

"I don’t mind paying over the odds for some people if you think that player will develop and become an asset for the team and be money well spent," O'Neill is quoted as saying.

"I did that with Ashley Young, but if I was told that a player I value at £7 million was for sale at £15m, then I would not be able to do that."
