Habib Beye Bullish On Newcastle United's Survival Chances

The Senegalese international says that last weekend's comeback result has given the Magpies them a timely shot of self-belief...

Habib Beye - Newcastle United
Habib Beye feels Newcastle United’s dramatic draw at Stoke City on Saturday shows the resolve that still infiltrates the squad.

Newcastle headed into the game against Tony Pulis’ side knowing that defeat would have left them chasing their tails in their bid to avoid the drop.

Second-half substitute Andy Carroll came through in the clutch for the Geordies, however, as the youngster's determined far-post header with barely 15 minutes left on the clock gave the visitors a potentially invaluable point in their relegation battle.

"This was a massive point and now we really believe we can do it," Beye boomed on the club's official website.

"Hopefully this will give us a bit of momentum now because, after they scored, few people would have expected us to leave with anything.

"Now we have six matches left, 18 points to play for and we know we can stay up. If we show this kind of spirit again maybe we can get something away from home, as well as the three matches we have at home."

The Senegalese defender, who only recently recovered from a shattered ankle, went on to credit new boss Alan Shearer for galvanising the team.

"Everyone knows what Alan Shearer has done before. He took this job for the last eight games because he is from the area and he wants to save Newcastle United," he added.

"If anyone can do that for this club it is him because everyone knows he is a Newcastle legend.

"He does not want to see Newcastle in the Championship and he is full of spirit. We are trying to make sure he achieves that.

"Every new manager wants to change something. We were in the bottom three for a reason and he has tried to bring more discipline.

"We have a challenge of the next 18 points and that would be perfect. Twelve would also be good."
