Bolton Wanderers boss Gary Megson gave his side mixed reviews after they so nearly managed to battle back from 4-0 down to salvage a draw against Chelsea, but the overwhelming feeling after the match was one of regret.
The visitors started well enough at Stamford Bridge but ultimately paid the price for a 15 minute spell at the start of the second half which saw them concede no less than three goals, giving the Blues what looked to be an utterly insurmountable four goal lead.
The Wanderers ended up making it a very nervy final 12 minutes for the hosts on the way to the 4-3 victory, leaving Megson to wonder what might have been had they not suffered such a fatal lapse of concentration.
"I felt for the first 25 minutes of the game we were doing fine without causing a huge amount of problems for Chelsea," Megson told Sky Sports after the match.
"We actually had more attempts at goal then they did in the first half but we didn't hit the target or work Petr Cech enough.
"The first goal we gave away was a really poor goal from our point of view, it was way too easy.
"At the beginning of the second half we just fell apart for 10, 15 minutes and it was looking like a cakewalk."
Bolton still have a relatively comfortable seven-point cushion separating them from the relegation zone, much to Megson's relief: "We're a lot safer than most. We don't accept that we're safe and for most people there is a realisation that 37 (points) won't be enough but we've got six games to go.
"It's a really big ask but if we played every game like we played the last 25 minutes of today's game, we'll get the results that we need without a shadow of a doubt."
