Alan Shearer Commends Newcastle United's Display Against Stoke

Shearer had few complaints after the hard-earned draw at Stoke but couldn't help but wonder what might have been had 'Oba' Martins been in the mix...

Newcastle United manager Alan Shearer is unveiled to the media
Newcastle United boss Alan Shearer saw the fact that they managed to come from behind to draw Stoke City 1-1 on Saturday as a psychological victory for his relegation-haunted side.

Second half substitute Andy Carroll came through in the clutch for the Geordies, as they youngster's determined far post header with barely 15 minutes on the clock gave the visitors a hard-earned draw and a potentially invaluable point in their bid to stave off relegation.

"Particularly [in the] second half I thought we were much braver," Shearer said on Sky Sports News after the intensely competitive game.

"I told them at halftime that we had to move Stoke around a little bit because if they are standing still, they are comfortable because they are big, strong lads.

"There was a bombardment after five minutes of the second half but we handled that well and we came out and we played our game and imposed ourselves on them.

"I suppose if I am greedy I thought we were going to go on and get three points because we have got some big lads in our team as well," he added before reserving special praise for the new-look backline.

"One of the reasons we played two or three extra big ones was to handle the threat of (Ricardo) Fuller and (James) Beattie and I thought our back three were brilliant."

Shearer also made special mention of the fact that Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins had to pull out of the squad at the last minute due to injury, suggesting that he could have been the difference between a battling draw and famous victory.

"Possibly we could have won the game if Martins had been fit," added the freshly instated gaffer.

"I was disappointed it took until 11 o'clock to sort out the injury in the first place.

"There was no evidence earlier in the week that he had the injury. It was disappointing that after two days of practising a system, we weren't able to implement it.

"He just said he woke up late and had a sore groin, the medical staff saw him and he wasn't fit to play. We've asked him to explain it, and we'll look at him further in the morning."
