Sir Alex Ferguson has again waxed lyrical about Federico Macheda after the Italian wunderkind came off the bench to decide a contest for Manchester United for the second week in a row.
United were in grave danger of dropping two invaluable points at Sunderland until Macheda was thrown into the fray with 15 minutes left to play and promptly scored with his first touch 46 seconds later. It is debatable just how much the ex-Lazio prospect knew about the goal, which came by way of a lethal redirection of a low drive from Michael Carrick, but Ferguson needs little convincing that the deflection was totally intended.
"He has got something special about him. One of the players said he actually tried it," Ferguson was quoted as saying on the Manchester Evening News.
"He side-footed it as it came to him. It's that quick-thinking that goalscorers have got. He has just got that instinct.
"He knows the role we want him to play. We want him to penetrate in behind them," the United gaffer added.
"He has got good movement, he has got quickness in his movement and it showed that when he came on.
"He wasn't fazed by anything. Right away, he got involved in the game and he had a good 20 minutes for us."
Manchester United reclaimed their place at the summit of the Premier League thanks to Macheda's heroics but Liverpool's win from earlier in the day means that it is very much still throats in the mouths time for the defending champions.
