Don't Judge Elmander By Goal Output Alone - Bolton Boss Megson
Megson insists that the Trotters' record signing has not been an Elm-ighty flop...
Bolton boss Gary Megson says it would be doing Johan Elmander an injustice to measure the impact that he has had in his first season at the club solely by his goals ratio.
The Swedish international is yet to feature on the scorer's sheet this calendar year, his last goal dating back to the middle of December. Even before that he hadn't exactly been prolific in his first season since arriving from Toulouse for a club record €8.9 million fee, with just five goals to his name from a campaign punctuated by injury.
Even while defending Wanderers' biggest ever purchase from criticism, Megson accepted that a forward ultimately needs to contribute goals and suggested that he is confident that these will come for Elmander when he's well and truly settled.
"He's got a great deal of quality. But we are still a team in transition. Maybe he's joined us a year too early from his own point of view," Megson told the club's official website.
"He's never been a massive goalscorer throughout his career but that's not to say I'm not disappointed for him. I'd hope and pray that he does finish with a few goals because as a centre forward, he'll be judged by that. But from the club's point of view, we are happy with him.
"If you look at his work-rate and the effort he is putting in - his contribution to what we do - more often than not we win games when he is in the side.
"Maybe he is struggling for a little bit of confidence because people are starting to look at the goals he hasn't scored. That happens to a lot of players."
