Portsmouth Boss Paul Hart Hails Glen Johnson As Best Right-Back In England

As the Pompey defender is named in the England line-up for the third consecutive game, his club manager has taken the time to offer some words of high praise...

Portsmouth right-back Glen Johnson has become an England regular in recent times, and his club manager, Paul Hart, thinks that it is really no surprise - his player is the finest in his position in the country.

There was talk recently of turning the powerful full-back into a right-sided midfielder after his display in the home victory against Everton, just prior to the international break, but Hart claims that he intends to continue using Johnson as a defender.

"I have said before, Johnson is a top, top player – one of the best in England," Hart told The Portsmouth News.

"When he played further up against Everton, he was great. If you look at Leighton Baines' stats over the previous 18 games, what their lad does is get forward.

"Against us, Baines – apart from his free-kick he scored from – didn't cause us any problems. You look at Glen, he makes a goal, is strong and as an opposing player it's your worst nightmare.

"You think Johnson's going to play at right-back, then he turns up on the right wing. This lad who is six foot, runs like the wind and has got great ability as well.

"I think he's a marvellous player. I'm not sure about converting him into a right-sided midfielder. That's certainly not on the agenda. It was needs-must against Everton and we will have a look at what happens this week.

"But it's quite obvious Glen is the best right-back in the country."

Johnson has been named alongside two of his club colleagues, Peter Crouch and David James, but Hart insists that he has no issue with so many of his key men featuring for the national team.

He concluded, "I really don't have an issue as long as everybody stays fit. I am not in a position to be able to make naughty comments about anybody, I'm just happy with my players being picked.

"I think that's a great privilege for the club and a great honour for them.

"I am happy if they play because I know they are great players. It confirms everything. On the downside, though, you do get a bit nervous."
