thumbnail Hello,

The Latics chairman has offered some typically forthright views on his manager's future...

Wigan Athletic manager Steve Bruce is only interested in one job other then his current position, club chairman Dave Whelan has today opined, and it is just down the road at Manchester United.

Many have speculated recently that Bruce, a native Geordie, might be lured by the charms of taking over at his hometown club Newcastle United.

That is unlikely to happen whilst Mike Ashley owns the Toon, Whelan feels, and thinks that the former Red Devils centre-back will be in all likelihood returning to Old Trafford in the not-too-distant future to succeed his former gaffer, Alex Ferguson.

"There's no chance of Steve going to Newcastle while Ashley is involved, if you ask him he will say the same," Whelan told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"There's no doubt he'll leave us but it will be to join one of the big four.

"There's only one job that Steve is really, really interested in and that's not too far away from the JJB Stadium.

"When Sir Alex Ferguson decides he's had enough at Old Trafford then I fear that Manchester United will come in for Steve. I don't think they'll get a better manager to replace Sir Alex than Steve Bruce."

Bruce is on the verge of steering Wigan to their highest ever finish in English football, and are on the verge of claiming a Europa League spot, a feat even more remarkable given their extensive transfer traffic in January, with several key players leaving the club.
