Liverpool To Back Rafael Benitez With £30-£40m For Summer Spree - Reports
The Spaniard has been promised funds for new acquisitions after signing a new five-year contract with the club...
It is claimed by The Sun that Tom Hicks and George Gillett, the Reds' American owners, are willing to hand the Spaniard £20 million for new purchases, as well as any cash he raises from players sales, including the £12m from Robbie Keane's return to Tottenham Hotspur in January.
The Daily Mail writes that the 48-year-old will be handed as much as £30 million to help land his identified transfer targets this summer.
Both publications suggest that the former Valencia head coach will return for Aston Villa's Gareth Barry, having failed to sign him last summer, and make an offer for Spurs winger Aaron Lennon, who has been in great form of late.
It is also said, by The Daily Mail, that Benitez will turn to his native Spain for fresh recruits, although no specific targets are mentioned.
If a report in The Daily Mirror is to be believed, the Madrid-born tactician has been told he will have as much as £40m to play with at the end of the season.
Alongside Barry and Lennon, it is alleged that Middlesbrough's left-sided winger Stewart Downing is a transfer target, as is Hull City centre-back Michael Turner.
Unsurprisingly, it is also claimed that Benitez will focus his attention on securing the long-term futures of key players such as Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt, Jose Reina, Alvaro Arbeloa and Daniel Agger.
