Portsmouth defender Sylvain Distin has revealed he has struggled to produce his best performances this season because of the changing of managers and a run of poor form.

Pompey find themselves in the Premier League's bottom three at present, but the French centre-back says it is where the team finish at the end of the season that is most important.

"I have been affected by the things that are happening at the club, with the manager and the results," Distin is quoted as saying in The Sun.

"Sometimes you don’t want to realise it affects you that much but it was contributing to my performances. I found myself doing stuff I do not usually do.

"I had a mental problem. I lost focus and my mind has not been there. That is because of our bad results, it is no coincidence.

"Luckily, I have good people around me who I could talk about things with. I am really close to my family and my dad is always around to give me good advice.

"I do not pay attention to being in the bottom three because it is still early in the season. Where we are now is not really important.

"It’s better to be in the top six than bottom three but the most important thing is what happens at the end of the season.

"Right now it would not be professional to think, ‘What if we go down? What am I going to do? Am I going to stay?’

"Of course it is in the back of my head but I don’t want to think about it as we have enough quality to stay up.

"The last few displays have been much improved. Even in our last game against Chelsea, we created enough chances to win. If we keep playing like that, I am sure we will be fine."
