Marton Fulop Embraces Competition At Sunderland
The Hungarian insists that he would rather be fighting for the starting gloves on Wearside than be the undisputed No. 1...
Marton Fulop has staked a serious claim to be the first choice shot-stopper at Sunderland following an injury to Craig Gordon - so much so that the starting spot has become his to lose.
"Sunderland are lucky to have two goalkeepers of a similar level," Fulop said to www.origu.hu.
"I'm trying to stay in the line-up but I think it's great that a record signing is on the bench behind me," the Hungarian added, referring to Gordon's £9 million price tag.
"I have a good relationship with Gordon. We sit next to each other in the dressing room but I feel that talking about who is the first-choice goalkeeper is a taboo for us.
"He's doing his best to try and prove he should be in the team and I think it has a positive effect on the team if two footballers compete for one place.
"It is the manager's dream to have to good players in the same position."
Gordon has recently gone on record as saying that he fears he will lose his place in the Scottish national side unless he wins back his starting spot from the 25-year-old Hungarian international. Fulop knows all too well how this feels, but admitted that his empathy has its limits.
"I have said the same in the past, fortunately this time I'm on the other side," the former Tottenham Hotspur 'keeper added.
"I want him to stay the first choice for Scotland but I have ambitions too, in the Hungarian national team. There's a condition: I must play at Sunderland."
