Carvalho Didn't Expect Scolari Appointment

Ricardo Carvalho has admitted that he fully didn't expect that Portuguese national team boss Luiz Felipe Scolari would be announced as the next manager at Chelsea.

The Brazilian World Cup winner, who was confirmed as the next Blues boss on Wednesday, had been linked with the post for the past couple of weeks in particular, though he had always been adamant he would not make a decision on his future until after Euro 2008.

Although admittedly caught off guard, Carvalho was clearly delighted by the appointment.

“He is a great manager and a big personality. He’s the kind of guy that players respond to and I think we can go forward with him," said the Chelsea centre-back.

“We were all shocked by the news. We heard the rumours but didn’t guess he would be going to Chelsea after the Euros.”

Portugal are flying high at the moment, as Deco, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ricardo Quaresma were all on target to beat the Czechs 3-1 Geneva and mean that their final match at the weekend against Switzerland is little more than a glorified friendly.
