Gabon employ Paulo Duarte as new coach
The former Burkina Faso coach succeeds Gernot Rohr at the helm of the Panthers ahead of the qualifiers for the 2014 Fifa World Cup and the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations
The Gabon Football Federation has appointed former Burkina Faso coach Paulo Duarte as the man in charge of the national team following the non-renewal of Gernot Rohr’s two-year contract, despite the fact that he led the Panthers to the quarter-finals of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
The 43-year-old Portuguese signed a two-year contract with the objectives of qualifying the team to the 2013 Afcon and the 2014 World Cup.
He will also serve as sporting director across the board, providing technical counsels to the junior national teams.
The Gabon Under-23 team is one of the four African representatives at the 2012 London Olympic football tournament which begins in July.
Duarte was fired from the Stallions outfit after failing to progress from the group stage at the 2012 Afcon in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. He was replaced by former Gambia coach Paul Put.
