The tournament that was meant to replace the cancelled league season has also been called off due to a lack of security assurances
Goal.com’s Egyptian edition has exclusively revealed that the alternative tournament that was to be held in place of the cancelled 2011/2012 Egyptian Premier League season has been called off as well.
Reasons cited for the decision are a lack of agreement between the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) and the country’s interior ministry on security arrangements for the fixtures.
Another impeding factor is that, so far, Smouha are the only side to have provided written consent to take part while other clubs have only offered non-binding verbal agreements.
The tournament was expected to begin on March 28 and include all clubs from the Egyptian top flight except for Al Masry whose officials are still under investigation for their part in the Port Said tragedy.
