Pitch invasion leaves three players seriously injured in Algeria - report

A missed penalty kick in the final minute resulted in a pitch invasion that left three visiting players seriously injured, but a police investigation has been launched

An Annaba regional association match in Algeria hosted by Shabab Wadi Zanati against first placed Ittihad Belkhir Boussif ended in chaos this weekend when fans invaded the pitch and attacked players of both teams using rocks and knives after a missed 91st minute penalty kick by the home side.

A total of 10 people were injured, six of which were from the visiting table toppers. Three of the visiting players that were targeted are now in hospital and are said to be in critical condition according to echouroukonline.com. Other victims included the secretary general of Ittihad Belkhir and two local journalists.

Zanati officials reportedly visited the injured players and condemned the shocking violence while Ittihad Belkhir administrators lodged a formal complain with the local police department. An investigation to determine the cause and culprits is underway.
