The Stade Omnisports Kenya of Caf double champions TP Mazembe now bears the name of a former minister who struggled to see the facility built and expanded
A day after celebrating the acquisition of their second private plane, Caf reigning champions TP Mazembe announced the renaming of their home stadium, the Stade Omnisports de Kenya, where the Kantaga club won the 2011 Caf Super Cup against Morocco’s FUS de Rabat in January.
The facility is now known as Complexe Omnisports Frederic Kibassa Maliba, named after a former DR Congo minister, who was a proponent and militant of the realisation of the project in Lubumbashi.
The 22,000-seater stadium is the country’s second largest sport facility after the Stade des Martyrs in the capital Kinshasa.
This is the third time the Lubumbashi stadium is being re-christened. It was formerly Stade Beaudoin and then Stade Mobutu, after the former president.
An ultramodern stadium for the Corbeaux is under construction, and is due for completion late next year, according to the club’s media department.
