Yanga 1-0 Simba: Ghanaian Kenneth Asamoah wins Cecafa title for Yanga in extra time

The final of the east African club competition, which also doubled as the Dar es Salaam derby was the 37th edition of the Cecafa club championship

Ghanaian Kenneth Asamoah came off the bench to help Yanga beat their local rivals Simba 1-0 and snatch the 2011 Cecafa Kagame Cup during the final played in the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Sunday evening.

Asamoah netted the all important goal with a powerful header in the 109th minute to send over 30,000 Yanga fans packed in the 60,000 seater stadium into delirium as Simba fans hung their heads in dejection.

The teams had played to a 0-0 draw during 90 minutes, forcing the match to go to extra time. Both teams played a cautious game in which the keepers had little to do. The same tempo continued in extra time until Asamoah broke the stalemate with his first touch of the ball from a cross to beat Simba's keeper with a powerful header from around the penalty area.

Asamoah, who joined Yanga last month, had replaced Jerry Tegete just two minutes before the goal.

The victory took Yanga’s tally in the regional tournament to four; two titles shy of Simba, who have won it a record six times.
