Yanga beat newcomers Red Stars of Eritrea on penalties while St. Georges thrashed Vita O’ 2-0 to book an interesting semi-final clash on Friday
Tanzanian giants Yanga sneaked into the Cecafa club championship semi-finals courtesy of controversial spot kicks against new comers Red Sea of Eritrea when the two faced each other today at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
The teams had settled on a goalless draw during normal time, but Yanga went on to win 6-5 on post match penalties. Yanga’s two penalties were retaken after the Red Sea keeper was adjudged to have come off the line. The first one was blocked by the keeper while the second hit the top bar. The respective players scored after they retook the spot kicks.
In the earlier quarter-final match, St. George of Ethiopia edged ten-men Vital O’ of Burundi 2-0 to sail through to the semi-finals.
Ghanaian Prince Godwin opened the scoring in the 42nd minute before striker Said added the second five minutes after the start of the second half.
Vital O' defender Steve Nzigamasabo was red carded at the stroke of half time for a second bookable offence to leave the Burundian side disadvantaged in defence.
Yanga will face St. Georges in the semi-finals on Friday.
