Ulimwengu Emmanuel nodded in an a late goal to give hosts Tanzania a 1-0 victory over Nigeria in a London 2012 Olympic games qualifying match in Dar Es Salam on Sunday evening.
In a highly competitive game that provided only a few chances for both sides, it was the hosts who took the initiative and earned a valuable home win. The Tanzanians had already eliminated African giants Cameroon in the first round of qualification and had enough confidence to repeat the feat against Nigeria.
The Nigerians, on the other hand, came into the game after an emphatic home and away victory over Equatorial Guinea. This loss means that they will await the return leg in Benin City two weeks from now in order to brighten their chances of qualification.
“It’s a two legged game that gives us the opportunity to get it right in the return leg. We lost a lot of scoring chances, if we had converted them it would have been a different story altogether, we will eliminate them. The victory is no doubt a good one for Tanzania, but they have no chance against us in the return leg at home”, said Nigeria coach Austin Eguavoen.
Nigeria won Olympic gold in 1996 and were silver medallists at the last tournament in Beijing.
