Madjid Bougherra has told Al Heddaf that Algerians should thank Rabah Saadane - who resigned following a home draw to Tanzania last weekend - for all that he has done to ensure the progression of the North African country’s favourite sport.

“We had some great moments with Saadane. With him, we succeeded in qualifying for the World Cup after an absence of many years. He’s a respectable coach who has done a lot for Algerian football and we have to be grateful for the work that he did,” said the Dijon native.

“After the match against Egypt, he was considered a hero but the recent bad result pushed him to leave. A page has been turned. That’s how football is. One day you’re here, the next you’re somewhere else. It’s the same thing with players, too.”

Bougherra added that he wasn’t very familiar and has never met the new caretaker coach, Abdelhak Ben Chikha, but that he was sure that if he was being considered for the job that he must know a great deal about Algerian football.

“I’ve heard people talk about him. I know that he’s coached the domestic national team and that he worked in Tunisia before. If he’s been working in Algeria then he must know our side well,” he explained.
