Guinea Bissau 1-0 Kenya: West African Minnows Humble Harambee Stars
Kenya's 2012 AFCON qualifying campaign kicks off to a shocking start away in Bissau...
By J.M. Momanyi
Guinea Bissau who are ranked in 188 in the latest FIFA World Rankings scored the lone goal that stunned the Harambee Stars in the 75th minute, thanks to Cicero Semedo.
Kenya, who had in their ranks the likes of Inter midfielder MacDonald Mariga and AJ Auxerre striker Dennis Oliech among the five foreign-based players called to the team, were unable to equalise in the remaining minutes of the game.
The win is an impressive result for Guinea Bissau, who last played in a competitive continental match in 2007 when they drew 1-1 with Cape Verde in an AFCON qualifier. Since then, the country has shied from participating in continental championships until today.
Before leaving for Bissau yesterday morning, Kenya's delegation had accused Guinea Bissau of playing unorthodox tricks after they failed to confirm when and where the game will be played despite daily requests by the Kenyan Football Federation. That notwithstanding, the team left Nairobi optimistic of getting a good result. The defeat leaves Kenya third in Group J. Uganda tops the group after they beat Angola 3-0 in an earlier match.
