Group A
ES Setif (Algeria) 3:0 Dynamos FC (Zimbabwe)
Algeria’s second continental representatives ES Setif pummelled visiting Zimbabwe’s Dynamos FC on Friday at the Stade de 8 Mai 45 in Setif, dashing the rising hopes of the Zimbabweans to reach the quarterfinals, after their last victory in Harare. Setif are registering their first win in four matches but could still edge past Dynamos to occupy the third position of Group A. Feham Bouazza’s 32nd minute goal put the hosts ahead, which he doubled in the 70th minute before pacy strikerYoucef Ghazali topped with a third in the 75th minute.
Esperance Tunis (Tunisia) 3:0 T P Mazembe (DR Congo)
Visibly handicapped by the absence of Captain Tresor Mputu and midfielder Lusadisu Basisila – both facing CAF suspension - defending champions TP Mazembe suffered abject humiliation in the hands of Tunisian giants Esperance Tunis on Saturday. Esperance’s 24-year-old captain and Nigeria-import Michael Eneramo opened the scoring early in the 20th minute, doubling two minutes before half time and throwing the 60,000-seater Stade de Rades into ecstasy. Defender Walid Hicheri sealed victory for the hosts with a third in the 81st minute, causing Mazembe their greatest defeat in recent times. Esperance now top Group A with nine points edging closer to the quarter-finals.
Group A Table – Esperance Tunis 9pts (+4), T P Mazembe 7pts (+0), ES Setif 4pts (+1), Dynamos FC 3pts (-5)
Group B
Heartland (Nigeria) 2:1 Ismaily (Egypt)
Nigeria’s Heartland FC and last year’s finalists humbled visiting Egypt’s Ismaily 2-1 on Sunday in Owerri (Nigeria) reviving thus their continental campaign in a modest fashion. Provoked by a 31st minute goal from Ismaily’s Soliman, the hosts intensified their assault to even scores before recess, which came from Ike in the 40th minute. Efugh sealed victory for the Samson Siasia men five minutes before time.
Al Ahly (Egypt) 1:1 JS Kabylie (Algeria)
The all-north African clash of the weekend, which dominated the media from North to South, ended in a stalemate that greatly favoured leaders of Group B JS Kabylie. Powered ahead early in the 22nd minute by a goal from Nagi, the hosts Al Ahly quickly saw their game largely checked by an-equal-in-power side Kabylie, who equalised with a brilliant strike from Tedjar in the 29th minute. JS Kabylie remain on top of the group with 10 points, needing just one point to qualify for the quarter-finals, while Al Ahly, who have just missed a worthwhile home win opportunity, come second with five points just one point ahead of reviving Heartland FC of Nigeria.
Group B Table – JS Kabylie 10pts (+4), Al Ahly 5pts (-1), Heartland 4pts (-1), Ismaily 3pts (+0)
