Charleroi defender Mohamed Chakouri has told Al Heddaf that he is excited at having been called up for the first time by Algerian national team coach Rabah Saadane for the Fennecs’ upcoming African Cup of Nations qualifier versus Tanzania on September 3rd.

“I still can’t believe it. I’m so happy to hear it. Honestly, I just can’t believe it. I want to be reserved about it but it’s the happiest day of my life,” exclaimed the 24-year-old.

Nevertheless, Chakouri admitted that he still hasn’t spoken to Saadane but that he had been contacted by Algerian Federation president Mohamed Raouaroua.

“He asked me if I would be available to wear the national colours. He told me that Saadane was thinking of calling me up and we spoke about the upcoming challenges of the national team. Raouraoua’s call made me very happy,” he said.

When asked whether he thought that he could bring some prototypical right-back play to the Fennecs, Chakouri was diplomatic.

“It’s true that there isn’t a prototypical right back in the squad but that doesn’t mean that I’m going to arrive with a sign on my back saying that I’m a starter. I know that I need to prove myself like everyone. Plus I need to recognise that the players who were at this post were still quite good, even though they weren’t typical right-backs,” explained the Arles native.
