In the second leg match of the Orange CAF Champions League, which kicked off on Saturday, Tunisia’s representatives Esperance de Tunis played host to Zimbabwe’s Dynamos FC at the 45,000-seater Stade El Menzah in Tunis.
Dynamos withstood the fiery assaults of Esperance throughout the encounter by operating with a compacted back-half and attempting shaky counterattacks.
Esperance’s Khaled Korbi, Darragi, Youssef Msakni, Khalil Chammam and Arrisson Afoul, all magnificently contributed to destabilising Dynamos' defence, coming close to goal scoring on several occasions. However, the Zimbabwean goalkeeper, Arubi, subjected to the afternoon’s agony, parried the strikes, some into corner kicks.
Towards the end of the first half, Dynamos almost made it, narrowly missing a goal following a defensive error committed by Esperance’s Siem Youssef; but striker Malajila wasted the one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
The second half had almost the same rhythm as the first,as Esperance began to dominate despite no goals for their efforts, and Dynamos defending with no opening for counter-attacks.
In the 82nd minute, Esperance striker Khaled Ayari fled with a ball and penetrated the visitors' penalty area before they could do anything about the threat. As he muscled forth, a Dynamos defender, having no other solution, floored the advancing man and was sanctioned by the referee. It was a penalty.
Darragi, coolly transformed it and lit up the feverish public into wide jubilations.
Esperance obtained their second straight win, having beaten Algeria’s Entente Setif in their away match two weeks ago. Meawhile, Dynamos' continental campaign is turning uglier after another consecutive loss. Esperance now top Group A with six points, awaiting Sunday’s encounter between former leaders of the group TP Mazembe who, pundits say, will beat Entente Setif.
