After Cameroon’s debacle at the 2010 World Cup, local fans and organisations keep airing their grievances against the players, federation and the government, with stern calls for ways to revive the country’s once brilliant football.
The latest action is coming from ElectFoot, a civil society organisation that advocates for the development of football in Cameroon.
According to ElectFoot, made up of hundreds of members, it is time for Cameroonians to wake up and take charge of their football. Speaking to reporters Friday at a press conference held at the French Hotel in Yaoundé, and reported by Quotidien Le Jour, the coordinator of the organisation, Pius Ottou said the Cameroonian football federation (FECAFOOT) needs to be overhauled.
“The crisis we are living in Cameroonian football today shouldn’t surprise anyone, since everything is done so that nothing works. The current leaders of FECAFOOT are in the majority people who have nothing to do with sports. When you find yourself with 149 people who focus on football only when they are at the FECAFOOT meetings, we should expect nothing,” Ottou said.
Ottou also said the FECAFOOT is overpopulated. Instead of 127 delegates stipulated by FIFA, they have 149.
The organisation finally launched a petition to oust the members of the FECAFOOT, which it says will go round the 10 regions of Cameroon in a bid to obtain enough signatures within a period of five days before presenting it to the government.
“We will go to the Confederation of African Football (CAF); we will go to FIFA as a civil society to tell them exactly what is happening in Cameroon. Our goal is to see new, viable youths emerge from Cameroon’s football,” said Pascal Atangana, another member of ElectFoot.
Ottou said the signing of the petition is opened to all those who want change in leadership at the FECAFOOT and change in Cameroon’s football.
