Libyan league champions, Al-Ittihad romped to a 2-0 victory over continental club giants Al-Ahly of Egypt in their 1/8th round Orange CAF Champions League clash played on Friday in Tripoli, Libya.
A goal from defender Younes Shibani and Ahmed Zuway gave the Tripoli-based club the needed first leg advantage that also keeps their ambitions on track.
The victory also served as a perfect revenge for the Libyan champions, who were edged out by their Egyptian counterparts at the semi finals of the same competition in 2007.
Ahly, six-time winners of the premier club competition had the better of possession but paid dearly for their wastefulness in front of goal. Striker Zuway terrorized the Ahly defence constantly as he guided his side to a historic win against the Cairo-based club.
On 13 minutes, Zuway flicked the ball into the path of central defender Shibani and the latter headed in the opener. Zuway wrapped up victory with the second goal on 73 minutes, heading home from a corner-kick.
The second leg will be staged in Cairo in a fortnight.
