Football Kenya Limited (FKL) will submit their bid to host the 2016 Africa Cup of Nations competition ahead of the Confederation of African Football (CAF)’s congress meeting in Luanda, Angola, in early January.

The congress will consider all the nations that have bid for the right to host the tournament and the winner will be announced after the meeting.

FKL Chairman, Mohammed Hatimy told The Standard that he was optimistic of a positive response from the Luanda meeting.

"We sent our secretary general Mohammed Thabit to place our bid to CAF at the weekend. We stand a greater chance compared to other applicants because we have good infrastructure," he said.

The chairman pointed out that the country already meets the main CAF requirements of having at least four FIFA-recognised stadiums with a capacity to host at least 30,000 fans and guaranteed security during the event.

"Apart from Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium, we have City Stadium, Mombasa Stadium and Kisumu’s Moi Stadium which we can renovate to host teams," said Hatimy.

Other countries also bidding to host 2016 event include Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Senegal. Gabon and Equatorial Guinea will be hosting the continental premier championship in 2012 Nations Cup, while Libya will host the event for the second time in 2014.

Nigeria was placed standby to host the tournament in case any of the nations fails to be ready to host the 2010, 2012 and 2014 championship.
