Nigerian Striker Stephen Worgu To Quit El Merriekh
The ex-Enyimba star has disclosed he will be leaving Sudan soon...
Nigerian striker Stephen Worgu has revealed that he plans to quit top Sudanese club El Merriekh by next month, when the transfer window reopens.
"I hope to leave Sudan by December," Worgu told Nigerian sports radio station, Brila FM on Monday.
Last year, Worgu was top scorer of the CAF Champions League with 13 goals and was courted by several European and African clubs including Egypt's Al Ahly, but opted to move to Sudan after El Merriekh made him a massive offer.
It has been a torrid time for the former Enyimba striker, who cost El Merriekh a record-breaking US $1,000,000 transfer fee when he joined them last year.
First, he struggled to find good form for the club and most recently he was at the centre of a drunk-driving charge and was even sentenced to 40 lashes.
Worgu claimed in a recent interview that the drunk-driving charge against him was a ploy by rivals Al Hilal to unsettle him ahead of decisive clashes between the two clubs.
"Some top officials and fans of Al Hilal are bent on pulling me down. Their grudge is that I signed for a rival club," Worgu told Nigerian sports newspaper Sports Day.
"They wanted me to sign for them, but they did not meet my demands and ever since then, they have been witch hunting me.
"They are doing all these because El Merriekh will be meeting with Al Hilal soon. It is the last game of the league and a week later, both teams will also meet in the final of the FA Cup."
