Switzerland Roll On At FIFA U-17 World Cup
Switzerland and Turkey march into the last eight of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Nigeria 2009...
Switzerland dumped European champions Germany 4-3 and Turkey defeated United Arab Emirates 2-0 in the round of 16 of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Nigeria on Wednesday night.
The encounter between the Swiss and the Germans was a match high on drama and entertainment as two players were sent off, a total of seven goals were scored by seven different players and the game had to be decided after extra-time with scores tied at 2-2 after normal time.
Lagos favourites Switzerland, who posted a 100 per cent record in the first round, were again at home at the Teslim Balogun Stadium when Ricardo Rodriguez snatched the lead for them after 35 minutes.
Germany then equalised four minutes later through Mario Gotze before Haris Seferovic regained the Swiss lead in the 49th minute. The German never-say-die spirit was again in full bloom when Florian Trinks found the target in the 78th minute to take the game into extra-time.
Switzerland again put their noses in front in the 101st minute through Andre Goncalves and Nassim Ben Khalifa appeared to have made the game safe for the Swiss when he scored from the penalty spot in the 116th minute after he was brought down on his way to goal.
Germany scored their third goal in the 118th minute with a curling shot from the edge of the box by Yunus Malli.
Germany also had Shkodran Mustafi sent off, while Switzerland's Sead Hajrovic equally saw red.
At the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium in Enugu, 10-man Turkey continued their march to the quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory over a gamely UAE.
The young Turks got off to a great start after just two minutes when Furkan Seker slotted home from six yards out, but they had to wait until stoppage time before Ufuk Uzbek made the game safe after a swift counterattack that caught their opponents defence napping.
In between the two goals, goalkeeper Deniz Mehmet had to make several saves to deny UAE and in the 39th minute, Ogulcan Gokce was given a straight red card for dangerous play.
