A group game in the Under-17 World Cup will be replayed on Thursday after bad weather caused the match to be abandoned...
A Group D FIFA Under-17 World Cup match between Turkey and Costa Rica at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, Eastern Nigeria, has been called off as a result of a heavy rain which flooded the artificial pitch and rendered it unplayable.
The match was suspended after 21 minutes of action with no goals recorded.
The Group D game will now be replayed on Thursday with officials saying the time for this rescheduled encounter will be decided later on Wednesday by FIFA.
Officials said this torrential rainfall is unusual at this time of the year in Nigeria.
The other rain delayed match in Group C involving Iran and Colombia in the coastal town of Calabar was eventually concluded after a long break. It ended in a goalless draw.
In the preceding game also in Calabar, the Netherlands beat African champions Gambia 2-1.
The FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Nigeria has been hit by several snags since it kicked off on Saturday.
There was a floodlight failure on Monday in a group match between Spain and the United States of America at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, while local organisers have battled poor attendance figures by getting host local governments to buy up tickets.
