FIFA Under-17 World Cup: Argentina Reach The Round Of 16

Two wins out of two for the high-flying South Americans are enough to guide them into the knock-out phase...

Argentina became the first team to qualify for the round of 16 at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Nigeria after they defeated Germany 2-1 in a Group A match in Abuja on Tuesday.

This was the Argentines' second win as many matches, having downed Honduras 1-0 in their opening fixture at the weekend.

The South Americans owe Tuesday's victory over the European champions to a second-half fightback.

Germany took the lead after eight minutes through a header by Mario Goetze but conceded a 55th minute penalty when defender Shkodran Mustafi brought down goal-bound Daniel Villalba. Skipper Esteban Espindola tucked away the resulting spot kick to restore parity.

From the restart, the impressive Sergio Araujo cashed in on a terrible German back-pass to score his team's second goal and his second of the competition.

Argentina had several other chances to kill the game off in the closing stages but failed to do so.

In Group B in Lagos, Switzerland fought back to beat Japan 4-3, despite having a penalty saved.
