Tony Sylva was recently sentenced by FIFA to pay his previous club Lille OSC a €1.1 million fine, after unilaterally deciding to leave the northern French club to go to Trabzonspor in the Turkish Super League, at the end of the 06/07 season.

In an interview with the Agence de Presse Senegalaise (APS), the former captain of the Senegalese selection declared that his sanction was incomprehensible, given his history with the club.

"My transfer from Monaco to Lille cost them zero francs, and I stayed there four seasons."

Asked a few more questions about his relationships with the club, he went out of his way to highlight what to him was a hypocritical situation, specifically targetting former coach Claude Puel.

He continued, "Puel had convinced me not to leave the club when I asked to see my situation at the club re-studied, but he himself didn't hesitate one second when Lyon came knocking."

Claude Puel was very insistent with the veteran at the time, publicly asking him to stay at the club. The former Monaco and Lille coach now manages seven-time champions Olympique Lyonnais.

Tony Sylva finished the interview by saying that he would be paying the fine, and that his situation with Trabzonspor was good enough that he could afford such an amount.
