''FIFA has condemned Tony Sylva to pay a sum of around €1.1 million to the Lille OSC" said the French club its official website.
After the 2007-2008 season, Sylva, then under contract with the LOSC, announced his decision to unilaterally terminate the contract which bound him to the club.
Considering the player's approach to be going against the country's labour laws, Lille OSC appealed to FIFA.
This week, the highest body of world football confirmed the validity of the northern club's request: a player who unilaterally decided to break his contract has to compensate his club employers.
And still according to the French club, in addition to financial penalties,''a disciplinary investigation against the player's agent has been opened.''
The goalkeeper, 34, has been wearing the colours of Turkish club Trabzonspor for the past two years.
He was a product of the famous Aldo Gentina academy, a structure dependent on AS Monaco where he pursued his career once he left Senegal.
But it is Lille where he would earn his stripes as a club starter in the French elite by passing a good run with this team in the Ligue 1 but also in the Champions League.
He was also the goalkeeper of the Senegalese team that made it to the 2002 World Cup quarter finals.
