Barcelona humbled title-holders Manchester United with a 2-0 victory in Rome, and therefore became the new champions of Europe.
Champions League matches are passionately viewed all over Africa, with Premier League victors United, together with Primera Division champions Barcelona, enjoying large fan bases.
It is not the first European Cup-related tragedy to blight the African continent this season. One 29-year-old Arsenal fan from Kenya fled a pub after watching the Gunners get knocked out of the semi-finals this season. Suleiman Alphonso Omondi later hung himself in his home. Police found Omondi still wearing his Arsenal shirt.
