Lemerre Releases Provisional Squad For Morocco's June Qualifiers

The French coach has revealed the expanded roster of 26 players whom he will be relying on for next month's qualifiers...

Morocco squad
Yesterday, the Moroccan national team coach, Roger Lemerre, announced the squad from which he will pick the players for the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches in Yaounde and Rabat. The list is a preliminary one, in that he will cut three or four players from it prior to a training camp scheduled for later this month.

The most notable omissions from the list are Abdeslam Ouaddou and Youssef Safri. Apparently, Ouaddou’s recent comments to the press - in which he heightened tensions by claiming he should be captain and mocking the efforts of Arab Gulf-based players - did not go unnoticed.

Meanwhile, Safri was not called up as he is suspended for the June 7 matchup against Cameroon. Furthermore, his penchant for causing problems during practices with his harsh tackles on younger team-mates (Adel Taarabt in particular) may also be to blame.

The aforementioned Taarabt also didn’t make the list as he is just returning from knee surgery. The technical staff have judged that it is too soon to expect him to be able to bring something to the team. To cope with his loss, Lemerre has turned to newly signed Olympiakos winger Jaouad Zairi.

The List in full:

Goalkeepers: Karim Fegrouche (Wydad AC), Nadir Lamiaghri (Wydad AC), Karim Zaza (Aalborg Bk), Brahim Zaari (FC Den Bosch)

Defenders: Mickael Chretien Basser (AS Nancy-Lorraine), Oualid Regragui (Grenoble Foot 38), Elamine Erbate (Al-Wahda), Talal El Karkouri (SC Qatar), Mehdi Benatia El Moutaqui (Clermont Foot), Issam Adoua (Wydad AC). Badr El Kaddouri (Dinamo Kiev), Hassan El Mouataz (K.S.C.Lokeren)

Midfielders: Younes Mankari (Wydad AC), Karim El Ahmadi (Feyenoord Rotterdam), Adil Hermach (RC Lens), Houssine Kharja (AS Sienne), Kamel Chafni (AJ Auxerres), Merouane Zemmama (Al-Schaab), Mbark Boussoufa (R.S.C. Anderlecht), Nabil Dirar (Club Brugges), Jaouad Zairi (Olympiakos)

Strikers: Youssouf Hadji (AS Nancy-Lorraine), Mounir El Hamdaoui (AZ Alkmaar), Nabil Baha (FC Malaga), Abdessalam Benjelloun (KSV Roulers), Marouane Chamakh (Girondins de Bordeaux)
